Fire & Ice Youth Programs

Fire and Ice has established youth programs to introduce and encourage ski and snowboard race activities, enhance education, and provide an environment in which our youth can develop the necessary skills to become independent, responsible and contributing adults. Our programs focus on youth between the ages of 6 and 20. Parent and volunteer participation is the essential foundation for the success of our programs.

Racing Programs Fire & Ice Ski Club has developed several youth programs to support the efforts of promoting the acquisition of skiing and snowboarding skills, and encouraging competitive racing activities in our youth.

Sponsor A Youth Skiing and snowboarding is a very expensive activity. To remove this economic barrier, Fire & Ice encourages our adult members & volunteers to provide financial assistance for a youth to participate in a ski trip or race activity.

First Time Ever Skiers/Snowboarders Grant Each winter season, Fire & Ice hosts at least two beginner ski trips. Although all are welcome, our goal is to introduce the sport of skiing and snowboarding to the youth. Special attention is givin to organizing ski and snowboard lessons for our first time skiers and snowboarders. Fire & Ice will apply a $75.00 grant towards any of our ski trips for lift tickets, equipment, and lessons to any qualified youth that has never skied before.

Take Those Kids To The Mountain To qualify for our racing team, our youth must participate in the BAC race events that are hosted at various ski resorts in Tahoe. Fire & Ice encourages our parents and adults to volunteer one day out of the ski season to take our kids to the mountain for race training sessions and events. We will donate a ski lift ticket to any parent or volunteer that participates.

Racing Team Support Each year, there are youth race activities at the Regional and National ski events. These events take place at various locations throughout the United States and Canada. In support of our youth race team Fire & Ice will provide financial assistance for race developmental program fees, race fees, registration, and traveling expenses for any qualified youth that represents Fire & Ice in the youth races at Winter Carnival, AMCC, or Summit events.

Dryland Race Training Program Fire & Ice teams with other local ski clubs to provide dryland training for our youth race team. This program gets them in shape and keeps them in shape during the spring and summer. This can include activities such as hiking, biking, and our formal training programs.

Kawanzaa Race Camp This is a five-day racing and skill development camp during the Thanksgiving week break. This event is sponsored by the NBS Western Region. Fire & Ice will provide finanical assistance to any qualified youth.

Building The Essentials Mentoring & Tutoring The Fire and Ice Youth Club has launched a new Youth Mentoring and Tutoring Program (YMTP) to offer help through professional and volunteer services; to help our Youth help themselves; strengthen their sense of self-esteem and self-respect and to bring about change in the systems. The goals for the Youth Mentoring and Tutoring Program are to improve academic skills, increase self-esteem, positively impact attitudes about learning and school, decrease interest in gangs and drugs and improve school attendance. The Youth Tutoring Program's 2004 objectives are to:

  • Provide peer leadership opportunities for older students to develop their leadership skills, to learn more about teaching as a potential profession, to learn job skills, to tutor younger students and to provide positive youth role models.
Building Essential Skills and Talent Program (B.E.S.T) This five day personal growth workshop is held during the sunner months on a college campus for youth members ages 13 - 18.
