About Fire & Ice

Fire & Ice Mission

Fire & Ice supports the efforts of the National Brotherhood of Skiers (NBS). The NBS has a mission to identify, develop, and support athletes of color who will win international and Olympic winter sports competitions representing the United States. Our goal is to have broader ethnic representation on the US Olympic winter sports teams. To that end, we provide encouragement, training, and financial support to develop young skiers and snowboarders who are elite-level competitive athletes.

As part of the National Brotherhood of Skiers (NBS), Fire & Ice Ski Club supports the efforts of the NBS by promoting:

  • Competitive skiing & snowboarding activities for our youth, with a special focus on ages 6 - 8. Our youth programs are designed to provide encouragement, training, and financial support to develop young skiers and snowboarders at all levels.

  • Recreational skiing & snowboarding activities for youth and adult at all levels. Throughout the winter season we offer a variety of ski/snowboard trips, one-day, multiple-day, youth, first timer & beginner, competitive, and adult-only activities.

  • Competitive skiing & snowboarding activities for adults.

  • Year round youth activities that enhance education and provide an environment in which our youth can develop he necessary skills to become independent, responsible and contributing adults.

  • Variety of activities throughout the year for youth and adults.  In addition to our snow activities, our calendar includes events such as camping, hiking, biking, card parties, fish frys, halloween fund-raiser, picnics, and beach parties.

Fire & Ice supports and participates in the National and Western Region fund raisers to support the:

Fire & Ice History

Fire and Ice Ski Club is predominantly an African American ski club based in the San Jose area. We emerged from All Seasons Ski Club located in Oakland, California, and organized May 1990.

In 1985, Southbay members of the Oakland club began conducting meetings in San Jose. Interest in starting a local club grew, and Fire and Ice Ski Club was formed. Our membership grew to over 100 members during our first year and continues to grow.

We organize functions throughout the year with a variety of activities for folks of all ages. Some of the events include ski trips, tennis tournaments, beach parties, skating, bowling, theater, game parties, community outreach, family activities, cruises, wind surfing, camping, and whatever sparks the interest of our members.

Fire and Ice Ski Club became a member of the National Brotherhood of Skiers (NBS) in June 1990. The NBS is a non-profit organization comprised of over eighty predominantly African American ski clubs with over 12,000 adults and children throughout the United States. The goal of the NBS is to identify, develop, and finance the training of future African American Olympians. All training funds are provided through donations and nationally sponsored fund raising activities such as the National Black Summit. In less than two decades, the NBS SUMMIT has become the largest ski convention in the country and represents the fastest growing segment of the skiing market.

In support of the NBS efforts, Fire & Ice has become a member of the United States Skiing Association (USSA) and the Bay Area Council of Ski Clubs which assist our racing efforts.

Fire and Ice Ski Club promotes the acquisition of skiing skills and encourages competitive racing, primarily among our youth. We support these efforts through local fundraisers, such as ski trips, game parties, and our annual Halloween Party.
